Inspect during good weather

3

Schedule hive inspections for warm, sunny days with low wind between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM when the majority of foragers are out collecting. Aim for ambient temperatures above 15°C (60°F) and avoid days with approaching storms or sustained winds above 25 km/h. A colony with most field bees absent contains fewer defenders, making inspections calmer and faster.

Why It Works

During favorable foraging conditions, 40-60% of a colony's adult population is away from the hive gathering nectar and pollen. Fewer bees in the hive means fewer guard bees responding to the intrusion. Cold or wet weather traps the full workforce inside, concentrating defensive bees and increasing the likelihood of mass stinging responses. Barometric pressure drops before storms also correlate with heightened colony irritability.

Tips

  • Check a 3-day weather forecast before planning inspections to identify the best window
  • If weather turns mid-inspection, close the hive promptly and return on a better day rather than pushing through
  • In regions with short warm seasons, prioritize inspections on the best-weather days and batch multiple hive tasks into a single visit
