Ensure adequate drone populations before queen rearing

3

Keep strong, healthy colonies in your apiary to maintain a robust drone population during queen mating season (typically April through August in temperate climates). A virgin queen mates with 12-20 drones from drone congregation areas within a 5-10 km radius, so local drone availability directly determines mating success.

Why It Works

Drone populations peak 2-3 weeks after strong colonies begin rearing drone brood in spring. Colonies weakened by Varroa destructor, poor nutrition, or disease produce fewer drones, reducing the mating pool for all queens in the area. By managing mite loads and ensuring colonies have adequate stores, you sustain the drone supply needed for successful mating.

Tips

  • Allow strong colonies to build natural drone comb rather than culling all drone brood for mite control during queen rearing periods
  • Time queen rearing to coincide with peak drone availability, typically late spring through midsummer
  • Keep at least 4-5 strong colonies within flight range of your mating nucs to ensure genetic diversity
  • Monitor Varroa levels and treat before they suppress drone production (threshold: 2-3 mites per 100 bees)
