Double filtering
4
Pass honey through two strainers in sequence to remove wax, bee parts, and fine debris. Start with a coarse strainer (approximately 600 micron mesh) to catch large wax chunks and insect fragments, then strain a second time through a finer mesh (approximately 200 micron) to remove smaller wax particles and debris. This produces noticeably clearer honey while retaining pollen and beneficial properties.
Why It Works
Using two filtration stages prevents the fine strainer from clogging quickly with large debris. The coarse pass handles bulk material, allowing the fine pass to work efficiently on smaller particles. This extends filter life and reduces hands-on time compared to repeated single-strainer passes.
Tips
- Let freshly extracted honey sit for 24 hours before filtering so air bubbles rise to the surface
- Strain honey while it is still warm from extraction for faster flow
- Clean strainers between batches with warm water to maintain flow rate
- Stainless steel strainers are more durable and easier to sanitize than nylon mesh
