Packages for lower initial cost

3

Bee packages are a more economical option for starting bee hives compared to nucleus colonies. Packages consist of a screened box containing approximately 2-3 pounds of loose bees and a mated queen in a separate cage. Packages are less expensive upfront, making them attractive for beekeepers on a budget or those starting multiple hives. However, packages require more time and resources to establish as they need to build comb and rear brood from scratch. Honey production in the first year may be limited compared to nucs.
