Grafting queen cells (advanced)

3

Raise your own queens by transferring 12-24 hour old larvae from a selected breeder queen into artificial queen cell cups, then placing them in a queenless starter colony. Once the cells are capped, move them to a finishing colony or incubator until the virgin queens emerge.

Why It Works

Grafting gives you direct control over which genetics propagate in your apiary. By choosing larvae from your best-performing colony, you replicate traits like disease resistance, calm temperament, and strong brood patterns. A single breeder queen can produce dozens of daughter queens per season through grafting.

Tips

  • Use a fine-tipped grafting tool (Chinese grafting tool is easiest for beginners) and work in warm, humid conditions to prevent larvae from drying out
  • Select larvae no older than 24 hours for the highest acceptance rate
  • A strong, well-fed starter colony with abundant nurse bees improves queen cell quality
  • Use an incubator set to 34.5C and 75% humidity for more consistent emergence timing
