Promote genetic diversity
3
Strengthen colony resilience against Colony Collapse Disorder by maintaining genetically diverse bee populations. Source queens from regional breeding programs that select for Varroa-sensitive hygiene (VSH), grooming behavior, and overwintering survival rather than a single trait. Introducing queens from different genetic lines each season broadens the colony's ability to respond to shifting disease and pest pressures.
Why It Works
Genetically uniform populations are vulnerable to the same pathogens and stressors simultaneously. Diverse colonies produce worker bees with varied immune responses and behavioral defenses, making the colony as a whole more resistant to the combination of factors (mites, viruses, nutritional stress) that drive CCD.
Tips
- Purchase queens from at least two or three different breeders to maximize genetic variation
- Prioritize breeders who select for local adaptation and disease resistance traits
- Allow colonies to raise their own queens occasionally to maintain natural selection pressure
- Avoid repeatedly grafting from a single mother queen across your entire apiary
