Diatomaceous earth (DE)

Diatomaceous earth (DE), specifically food-grade DE, is used as a natural control for small hive beetles (SHB). DE is a powder made from fossilized diatoms. Its fine particles have abrasive and desiccant properties that damage the exoskeleton of SHB larvae and adults, leading to dehydration and death. DE is applied around the hive base to target SHB larvae as they pupate in the soil, and can also be used cautiously within beetle traps. Use food-grade DE to minimize risks to bees. Avoid direct application on bees or brood. DE is a DIY approach and is relatively inexpensive. A duster is helpful for even application of DE around the hive and in traps. Use DE cautiously and strategically as part of an IPM approach.
