Apply diatomaceous earth around hive bases

2

Spread a ring of food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) on the ground around each hive base, creating a continuous barrier 5-10 cm wide. SHB larvae leave the hive to pupate in the soil, and DE kills them before they can complete their life cycle and return as adults.

Why It Works

DE consists of microscopic fossilized diatom shells with razor-sharp edges that abrade insect exoskeletons. Once the waxy cuticle is damaged, larvae and adult beetles lose moisture rapidly and die from desiccation within 24-48 hours. This mechanical action means beetles cannot develop resistance, unlike chemical treatments.

Tips

  • Use only food-grade DE, never pool-grade, which contains crystalline silica harmful to humans and bees
  • Reapply after rain or heavy dew, as wet DE loses its abrasive effectiveness
  • Do not apply DE inside the hive or near the entrance; it is equally harmful to bee cuticles on direct contact
  • Wear a dust mask during application to avoid inhaling fine particles
