Diatomaceous earth (DE)
3
Applying food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) around the hive base is another natural method to control ants. DE is a fine powder made from fossilized diatoms that is abrasive to insects' exoskeletons, causing dehydration and death. Food-grade DE is safe for bees and the environment when used correctly. It should be sprinkled in a dry ring around the hive base, creating a barrier ants must cross. DE is most effective in dry conditions and needs to be reapplied after rain or watering. While DE can deter ants, it should be used cautiously and avoided from direct contact with bees inside the hive, as it can also be abrasive to them. It is a relatively inexpensive and effective option for ant control.
