Build or buy a predator-proof coop, hutch, or barn
5
Construct or purchase housing built with sturdy materials and designed specifically to exclude predators. Cover all openings with 1/2-inch hardware cloth, use two-step latches on doors, and elevate the structure slightly off the ground to prevent rot and deter rodents from nesting underneath.
Why It Works
Backyard animals face predation from raccoons, foxes, coyotes, weasels, hawks, owls, and neighborhood dogs. A purpose-built shelter with no gaps larger than 1/2 inch, predator-proof latches, and solid construction is the foundation of all other predator defenses.
Tips
- Pre-built coops from big-box stores are often flimsy and use chicken wire instead of hardware cloth — inspect before buying
- Building your own allows customization for your specific space, animal count, and local predators
- Bury a wire apron around the perimeter base to prevent digging predators
