Install species-specific features: roosts, nesting boxes, hay racks
4
Equip shelters with the interior fixtures each species needs. Chickens require roosting bars (2x4 lumber, wide side up, 8-10 inches per bird) placed higher than nesting boxes, plus one nesting box (12x12x12 inches) for every 3-4 hens. Goats need elevated hay racks to keep feed clean, and enjoy platforms or benches for climbing and resting. Rabbits need a solid resting area (not all wire) and secure feeders that prevent tipping.
Why It Works
Chickens instinctively roost off the ground at night for safety and will not use nesting boxes placed above their roost height. Goats waste up to 30% of hay fed on the ground by trampling and soiling it. Species-specific fixtures match the animals' natural behavior and reduce waste.
Tips
- Place roosts away from walls to prevent mites hiding in cracks and climbing onto birds
- Dark, enclosed nesting boxes encourage hens to lay in them rather than on the floor
- Position all fixtures to allow easy cleaning access behind and beneath them
