Assess available space realistically
5
Measure your usable backyard area and compare it against minimum space requirements before committing to any animal. Chickens need 4 sq ft per bird inside the coop and 8-10 sq ft per bird in an outdoor run. Miniature goats need at least 200 sq ft of outdoor space per animal. Rabbits can be raised in hutches as small as 6-8 sq ft per rabbit but benefit from exercise areas.
Why It Works
Overcrowding causes stress, disease, aggression, and reduced production. Local ordinances also mandate minimum setbacks from property lines and neighboring dwellings, which further reduces usable space.
Tips
- Quail and rabbits are the best options for very small yards under 500 sq ft
- Factor in space for feed storage, manure composting, and equipment
