Build raised beds to bypass poor native soil
5
Construct raised beds (at least 10-12 inches deep) and fill with a quality mix of topsoil, compost, and perlite or vermiculite. This creates an ideal growing medium from scratch, completely bypassing problem native soil.
Why It Works
If your existing soil is extremely rocky, heavy clay, contaminated, or otherwise unworkable, amending it in place may take years. Raised beds give you immediate control over soil quality, drainage, and structure. Plants get a perfect root environment from day one.
Tips
- A mix of roughly 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% perlite works well for most vegetables
- Beds on the ground allow roots to extend into native soil below, which is beneficial
- Beds on concrete or asphalt need at least 18 inches of depth for root crops
- Higher initial cost but provides immediate results where in-ground amendment is impractical
- Plan for 1-2 inches of settling in the first season — overfill by 10-15%
