Use Drip Irrigation or Soaker Hoses
5
Install drip emitters or soaker hoses to deliver water slowly and directly to the soil at the base of each plant. These systems minimize evaporation and runoff by keeping water off foliage and targeting the root zone. Pair them with a timer for automated, consistent watering that removes guesswork from your routine.
Why It Works
Drip systems apply water at a rate the soil can absorb, preventing both surface pooling (over-watering) and shallow penetration (under-watering). Dry foliage also reduces the risk of fungal diseases like powdery mildew and blight.
Tips
- Start with an inexpensive soaker hose before investing in a full drip kit
- Run the system for 30-60 minutes and then check soil depth penetration to calibrate timing
- Flush drip lines periodically to prevent clogging from mineral buildup
