Improve Soil Drainage

4

Amend heavy clay or compacted soil with compost and other organic matter to improve its structure and drainage. For persistent waterlogging, switch to raised beds or containers filled with a well-draining soil mix. Good drainage ensures excess water moves away from roots instead of suffocating them, directly addressing the most common cause of over-watering damage.

Why It Works

Organic matter opens up pore space in dense soil, allowing water to infiltrate and drain rather than pool at the surface. Raised beds give you full control over soil composition and naturally shed excess moisture through their sides and bottom.

Tips

  • Work 2-4 inches of compost into the top 6-8 inches of soil before each planting season
  • Perlite or coarse sand mixed into potting soil improves container drainage
  • Avoid walking on garden beds, as foot traffic compacts soil and worsens drainage
