Improve Air Circulation Around Seedlings
3
Set a small fan on low speed near your seedling trays for a few hours each day. Direct the airflow near the seedlings rather than blasting them head-on. Remove humidity domes as soon as seeds have germinated to let fresh air reach the soil surface.
Why It Works
Stagnant, humid air is the primary breeding ground for damping-off fungi and other seedling diseases. Gentle air movement dries the soil surface enough to suppress fungal growth while the slight mechanical stress on stems triggers them to grow thicker and stronger, much like wind does outdoors.
Tips
- An oscillating fan provides more even coverage than a fixed one
- Run the fan during the light period and turn it off at night
- If seedlings dry out too quickly with the fan, move it further away or reduce the runtime
