Apply Neem Oil
Spray neem oil solution on affected plants to control a wide range of garden pests including aphids, beetles, mealybugs, and spider mites. Mix cold-pressed neem oil concentrate with water and a small amount of liquid soap as an emulsifier, following label rates. Apply thoroughly to all plant surfaces, particularly leaf undersides, in the evening or early morning to avoid leaf scorch and reduce impact on active pollinators.
Why It Works
Neem oil contains azadirachtin, which disrupts insect feeding, growth, and reproduction by interfering with their hormonal systems. It also acts as a smothering agent on contact and has antifungal properties effective against powdery mildew and black spot. Because it works through multiple modes of action, pests are less likely to develop resistance.
Tips
- Never apply in direct sunlight or when temperatures exceed 32°C (90°F)
- Shake the sprayer frequently during application since oil and water separate
- Reapply every seven to fourteen days as neem breaks down in sunlight
- Store concentrate in a cool, dark place to preserve potency
- Use cold-pressed neem oil for highest azadirachtin content
