Employ Close Plant Spacing

3

Plant vegetables at intensive spacing following methods like square foot gardening (developed by Mel Bartholomew). Space plants at the closest recommended distance so their mature leaf canopy fully covers the soil surface, leaving no gaps for weeds.

Why It Works

Dense plant canopies shade the soil, reducing light availability at ground level by up to 80-90%. Weed seeds need light to germinate, so a living mulch of crop leaves naturally suppresses new weed growth without any added materials. This approach also maximizes yield per square foot.

Tips

  • Amend soil with 2-3 inches of compost annually to support the higher plant density
  • Ensure consistent watering since more plants compete for moisture
  • Start with leafy crops (lettuce, kale, spinach) that canopy quickly and shade out weeds within 3-4 weeks
