Size Up the Load and Clear Your Path Before Lifting
4
Proper planning before lifting prevents unexpected strains and accidents. Taking a moment to assess the object, plan your route, and clear obstacles reduces your risk of injury during the actual lift and carry.
Steps
- Assess weight and size by testing the object before attempting a full lift. Push or tilt it to gauge whether it is manageable for one person.
- Check your destination so you know exactly where you are moving the object and can set it down without hesitation.
- Clear the path between the starting point and destination. Remove obstructions, tripping hazards such as rugs and cords, and watch for slippery spots.
- Plan your grip by deciding how you will hold the object securely before you begin.
- Identify rest points if you need to carry the object a long distance, so you can set it down safely rather than rushing.
