Size Up the Load and Clear Your Path Before Lifting

4

Proper planning before lifting prevents unexpected strains and accidents. Taking a moment to assess the object, plan your route, and clear obstacles reduces your risk of injury during the actual lift and carry.

Steps

  1. Assess weight and size by testing the object before attempting a full lift. Push or tilt it to gauge whether it is manageable for one person.
  2. Check your destination so you know exactly where you are moving the object and can set it down without hesitation.
  3. Clear the path between the starting point and destination. Remove obstructions, tripping hazards such as rugs and cords, and watch for slippery spots.
  4. Plan your grip by deciding how you will hold the object securely before you begin.
  5. Identify rest points if you need to carry the object a long distance, so you can set it down safely rather than rushing.
