Use Coordinated Team Lifting for Heavy or Awkward Loads
4
When an object is too heavy or awkward for one person, lifting with helpers requires clear communication and coordination. A well-organized team lift distributes the weight evenly and keeps everyone in sync, preventing the sudden shifts that cause drops and injuries.
Steps
- Recruit enough helpers for the object's weight and size. When in doubt, add an extra person.
- Designate a leader who will call out verbal cues and coordinate the lift.
- Plan before you lift. Discuss the route, each person's grip point, and agree on a verbal cue such as "Ready? Lift on three. One, two, three, lift."
- Position everyone correctly around the object so that each lifter can use proper technique: knees bent, back straight, load close.
- Lift together on the agreed cue, keeping the load balanced and level.
- Move slowly and communicate. Call out adjustments, stops, or obstacles as you walk.
- Lower together on cue, bending at the knees to set the object down in a controlled manner.
