Use Coordinated Team Lifting for Heavy or Awkward Loads

4

When an object is too heavy or awkward for one person, lifting with helpers requires clear communication and coordination. A well-organized team lift distributes the weight evenly and keeps everyone in sync, preventing the sudden shifts that cause drops and injuries.

Steps

  1. Recruit enough helpers for the object's weight and size. When in doubt, add an extra person.
  2. Designate a leader who will call out verbal cues and coordinate the lift.
  3. Plan before you lift. Discuss the route, each person's grip point, and agree on a verbal cue such as "Ready? Lift on three. One, two, three, lift."
  4. Position everyone correctly around the object so that each lifter can use proper technique: knees bent, back straight, load close.
  5. Lift together on the agreed cue, keeping the load balanced and level.
  6. Move slowly and communicate. Call out adjustments, stops, or obstacles as you walk.
  7. Lower together on cue, bending at the knees to set the object down in a controlled manner.
