Remove poisons, choking hazards, and drowning risks
5
Beyond installing safety devices, actively removing or locking away dangerous items prevents the leading causes of injury death in young children: poisoning, choking, strangulation, suffocation, and drowning.
What to Secure
- Chemicals and medicines in locked cabinets or on high shelves out of reach and sight. Laundry pods are especially dangerous because they look appealing to children.
- Small objects such as coins, button batteries, magnets, and foods like whole grapes. Button batteries can cause fatal internal burns if swallowed.
- Cords and wires secured out of reach. Switch to cordless window coverings to eliminate blind-cord strangulation risk.
- Plastic bags stored completely out of reach due to suffocation risk.
Tips
- Never leave a child unattended near any water, including bathtubs, buckets, and toilets. Drowning can happen in as little as one inch of water.
- Install toilet locks on all toilets accessible to young children
- Sweep floors daily for small dropped objects
