Get down to child's level and reassess regularly
4
Seeing your home from a child's perspective reveals hazards invisible from adult height. Childproofing is not a one-time task -- it requires ongoing reassessment as children grow taller, stronger, and more capable.
Steps
- Crawl through each room your child can access. Look for small objects on the floor, accessible cords, sharp corners at head level, and unstable furniture a child might grab.
- Test all safety devices including cabinet latches, baby gates, outlet covers, and furniture anchors. Confirm they are secure and functional.
- Reassess every few months as your child develops new abilities. A crawling infant and a climbing toddler face very different hazards.
Tips
- Adhesive-mounted devices loosen over time and need regular checking
- Update childproofing whenever your child masters a new skill like climbing, opening doors, or reaching higher surfaces
