Use the Four-Box Method (Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate)
4
A systematic sorting method that forces a clear decision about every item in a targeted area. Pick a small zone, set up four labeled containers, and process each item one by one with no "maybe" pile.
Steps
- Pick one small area — a single drawer, shelf, or countertop.
- Label four boxes: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, Relocate (belongs elsewhere in the house).
- Handle every item and place it immediately into one of the four boxes.
- Act right away — return Keep items organized, bag Trash for disposal, move Donate/Sell to your car or drop-off spot, and put Relocate items in their proper rooms.
- Repeat with the next small area.
Why It Works
The four fixed categories eliminate decision fatigue by narrowing choices. Starting small builds momentum and delivers a visible win quickly, making it easier to keep going.
Tips
- Start with low-attachment areas like a junk drawer or bathroom cabinet to build confidence before tackling sentimental items
- Set a 20-minute timer per area to maintain focus and prevent burnout
