Sort by category with timed sessions (KonMari-inspired)
4
Combine timed work sessions with category-based sorting to keep the process manageable and thorough. Instead of tackling room by room, gather all items of one type so you see the full volume before deciding what stays.
Steps
- Set a timer for 15-30 minutes and focus on one category only — stop when it rings.
- Gather every item in that category from the entire house into one spot (e.g., all books, all toiletries).
- Decide item by item — keep only what you genuinely use or value.
- Assign a home for every kept item. If something has no logical storage spot, reconsider whether you need it.
Why It Works
Short timed bursts prevent burnout and make it easy to start. Sorting by category reveals duplicates and forgotten items that a room-by-room sweep often misses, leading to more confident decisions.
Tips
- Follow the recommended KonMari category order: clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous, then sentimental items (easiest to hardest)
- Photograph sentimental items you decide to let go of — you keep the memory without the physical clutter
