Use the Four-Box Method (Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, Relocate)

5

Description

This systematic sorting method forces decisions about each item in a targeted area.

Recipe/Instructions

  1. Choose Small Area: Start with one manageable area (a drawer, shelf, countertop, small closet section).
  2. Set Up Boxes/Bags: Label four boxes or areas clearly: KEEP, DONATE/SELL, TRASH, RELOCATE (for items that belong elsewhere in the house).
  3. Process Every Item: Pick up each item in the chosen area individually. Make an immediate decision and place it into one of the four boxes. Avoid creating a 'maybe' pile.
    • Keep: Items you use regularly, truly love, or are essential.
    • Donate/Sell: Items in good condition that you no longer need or want, but someone else could use.
    • Trash: Items that are broken, expired, unusable, or not suitable for donation.
    • Relocate: Items that belong in a different room or area.
  4. Act Immediately: Once the area is cleared, immediately put the 'Keep' items back in an organized way. Take the 'Trash' out. Place the 'Donate/Sell' box in your car or designated spot for drop-off/listing. Distribute the 'Relocate' items to their proper homes.
  5. Repeat: Tackle other small areas progressively.
