Use the Four-Box Method (Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate)

4

A systematic sorting method that forces a clear decision about every item in a targeted area. Pick a small zone, set up four labeled containers, and process each item one by one with no "maybe" pile.

Steps

  1. Pick one small area — a single drawer, shelf, or countertop.
  2. Label four boxes: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, Relocate (belongs elsewhere in the house).
  3. Handle every item and place it immediately into one of the four boxes.
  4. Act right away — return Keep items organized, bag Trash for disposal, move Donate/Sell to your car or drop-off spot, and put Relocate items in their proper rooms.
  5. Repeat with the next small area.

Why It Works

The four fixed categories eliminate decision fatigue by narrowing choices. Starting small builds momentum and delivers a visible win quickly, making it easier to keep going.

Tips

  • Start with low-attachment areas like a junk drawer or bathroom cabinet to build confidence before tackling sentimental items
  • Set a 20-minute timer per area to maintain focus and prevent burnout
