Set an apple cider vinegar trap
4
A simple, effective trap that exploits fruit flies' attraction to the acetic acid in fermented apple cider vinegar. Most kitchens already have everything needed.
Steps
- Pour about 1 inch of apple cider vinegar into a small jar or bowl.
- Add 2-3 drops of liquid dish soap to break the surface tension so flies sink on contact.
- Optionally cover with plastic wrap secured by a rubber band and poke several small holes.
- Place the trap near problem areas — fruit bowl, sink drain, or trash can.
- Replace the vinegar every 2-3 days to keep the scent strong.
Why It Works
Fruit flies detect fermentation byproducts in apple cider vinegar from a distance. The dish soap eliminates the surface tension that would otherwise let them land and escape. Maintain traps for at least two weeks to outlast the full breeding cycle.
Tips
- White vinegar does not work — it lacks the fermentation compounds fruit flies seek.
- Multiple small traps spread around the kitchen outperform one large trap.
