Eliminate breeding sites and food sources

5

The most important long-term fix. Without breeding sites, fruit fly populations collapse within one to two weeks as the current generation dies off without reproducing.

Steps

  1. Discard or refrigerate overripe fruit and vegetables immediately.
  2. Clean spills on counters and floors, especially juice, wine, or sugary liquids.
  3. Take out trash regularly and use bins with tight-fitting lids.
  4. Flush drains with boiling water or a drain brush to remove organic buildup where larvae develop.
  5. Rinse recyclables before storing — beer bottles and juice cartons are common breeding spots.

Why It Works

Fruit flies lay up to 500 eggs on moist, fermenting organic matter. Removing these surfaces eliminates both the food supply and the egg-laying sites, breaking the reproductive cycle at its source.

Tips

  • Compost bins are a major attractor — keep them sealed or move them outdoors.
  • Wipe the underside of fruit bowl liners; residue there is easy to miss.
