Secure Boards from Below (If Accessible)
4
The most effective long-term fix when you can reach the underside of the floor through a basement or crawl space. Tightening the connection between subfloor and joists eliminates movement without leaving any marks on the floor surface.
Steps
- Have someone walk on the floor above while you watch from below to pinpoint which boards and joists are moving.
- Apply construction adhesive in a bead along the gap between the subfloor and the joist where movement is visible.
- For extra hold, drive short wood screws up through the subfloor into the base of the floorboards. Use screws short enough that they will not poke through the finished surface.
- Check the repair by having someone walk over the area again.
Tips
Use a caulk gun for clean adhesive application. If the gap between joist and subfloor is large, wedge a thin wood shim coated with adhesive into it before screwing. Always measure board thickness before choosing screw length to avoid puncturing the floor above.
