Secure Boards from Below (If Accessible)

4

The most effective long-term fix when you can reach the underside of the floor through a basement or crawl space. Tightening the connection between subfloor and joists eliminates movement without leaving any marks on the floor surface.

Steps

  1. Have someone walk on the floor above while you watch from below to pinpoint which boards and joists are moving.
  2. Apply construction adhesive in a bead along the gap between the subfloor and the joist where movement is visible.
  3. For extra hold, drive short wood screws up through the subfloor into the base of the floorboards. Use screws short enough that they will not poke through the finished surface.
  4. Check the repair by having someone walk over the area again.

Tips

Use a caulk gun for clean adhesive application. If the gap between joist and subfloor is large, wedge a thin wood shim coated with adhesive into it before screwing. Always measure board thickness before choosing screw length to avoid puncturing the floor above.
