Apply Lubricating Powder
3
A quick, non-invasive fix that reduces friction between boards by filling the gaps with a dry lubricant. Best for mild creaks where boards rub against each other rather than against joists.
Steps
- Walk the floor to identify which boards creak and mark them lightly with tape.
- Sprinkle talcum powder, graphite powder, or powdered soapstone generously into the seams around the noisy boards.
- Use a soft brush or cloth to work the powder down into the cracks.
- Step on the boards repeatedly to help the powder settle deeper into the joints.
- Sweep or vacuum any excess powder from the surface.
Tips
Graphite powder lasts longer than talcum but can darken light-colored floors, so test in a hidden spot first. This fix may need reapplication after several months as the powder gradually works its way out.
