How do I keep pipes from freezing in the winter?

Identify pipes in unheated or poorly insulated areas (basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, exterior walls). Purchase foam pipe sleeves or fiberglass insulation wrap from a hardware store. Cut the insulation to length and fit it securely around the pipes, ensuring there are no gaps. Seal seams and joints with duct tape.

During severe cold snaps, allow faucets connected to vulnerable pipes to drip slowly (both hot and cold water lines). Even a trickle of moving water can prevent pipes from freezing solid. This is particularly important for pipes on exterior walls.

For pipes located inside cabinets under sinks (especially on exterior walls), keep the cabinet doors open during cold weather. This allows warmer air from the room to circulate around the pipes, helping to keep them above freezing temperatures.
