Use petroleum jelly or household oil from your cupboard
4
Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or a light household oil like 3-in-1 oil can silence a squeaky hinge without a trip to the store. Petroleum jelly is especially effective because its thick consistency keeps it in place on the hinge pin for months.
Steps
- Apply a few drops of oil onto the hinge pin and joints, or smear a small amount of petroleum jelly directly onto the pin.
- For better coverage, partially or fully remove the hinge pin and coat it before reinserting.
- Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant.
- Wipe away any excess with a rag.
Tips
- Avoid cooking oils like olive or vegetable oil -- they go rancid, attract dust, and become sticky, making the squeak worse over time
- Mineral-based oils and petroleum jelly are reliable because they do not break down or turn gummy
