Use petroleum jelly or household oil from your cupboard

4

Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or a light household oil like 3-in-1 oil can silence a squeaky hinge without a trip to the store. Petroleum jelly is especially effective because its thick consistency keeps it in place on the hinge pin for months.

Steps

  1. Apply a few drops of oil onto the hinge pin and joints, or smear a small amount of petroleum jelly directly onto the pin.
  2. For better coverage, partially or fully remove the hinge pin and coat it before reinserting.
  3. Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant.
  4. Wipe away any excess with a rag.

Tips

  • Avoid cooking oils like olive or vegetable oil -- they go rancid, attract dust, and become sticky, making the squeak worse over time
  • Mineral-based oils and petroleum jelly are reliable because they do not break down or turn gummy
