Eliminate standing water and use fans and repellent plants
4
Remove breeding sites, disrupt flight paths with airflow, and surround seating areas with mosquito-repelling plants for a multi-layered natural defense.
Steps
- Remove standing water: Empty buckets, saucers, tires, and clogged gutters weekly. Mosquitoes lay eggs in as little as a bottle-cap of stagnant water and larvae mature in 7-10 days.
- Add moving water: Fit birdbaths and rain barrels with small fountains or agitators. Mosquitoes cannot lay eggs on moving surfaces.
- Run fans on the patio: Place one or two oscillating fans near seating. Mosquitoes fly at roughly 1-1.5 mph, so even a gentle breeze disperses the CO2 plume they follow and makes landing difficult.
- Plant repellent species nearby: Cymbopogon (citronella grass), lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, basil, and catnip contain volatile oils that deter mosquitoes when foliage is brushed or crushed.
Tips
- Walk the yard after rain to catch overlooked water traps like tarp folds and toy buckets
- Crushing a leaf of basil or rosemary and rubbing it on skin provides short-term topical repellency
- Fans also keep guests cooler, making the patio more comfortable in peak mosquito season
