Apply shaving cream or soap film

4

Rub a thin layer of shaving cream or bar soap onto the mirror and buff it clear. The invisible surfactant film left behind prevents water vapor from forming discrete droplets, forcing it to sheet into a transparent layer instead. One application typically lasts 1-2 weeks.

Steps

  1. Clean the mirror with glass cleaner and let it dry completely.
  2. Apply a thin layer of shaving cream (foam, not gel) or rub a slightly damp bar of soap across the surface.
  3. Buff with a dry microfiber cloth until the mirror is completely clear and streak-free.

Why It Works

Fog forms when water vapor condenses into tiny, light-scattering droplets on a cool surface. Surfactants in soap and shaving cream reduce the surface tension of water, causing it to spread into a flat, transparent sheet rather than individual droplets. This is the same principle behind commercial anti-fog products.

Tips

  • Foam shaving cream spreads more evenly than gel or bar soap
  • Reapply when you notice fogging returning, typically every 1-2 weeks
  • Dish soap (a drop on a damp cloth) also works as an alternative
