Master proper prep, technique, and aftercare
5
Softening hair before shaving, using a sharp blade with proper technique, and soothing skin afterward addresses the three main causes of razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Steps
- Prep the skin: Shave during or right after a warm shower — heat and moisture soften hair by up to 70%. Alternatively, hold a warm damp towel on the area for 2-3 minutes. Exfoliate gently 1-2 times per week to clear dead skin that traps hairs.
- Lubricate generously: Apply shaving cream, gel, or oil and let it sit for 60 seconds before the first stroke. This further softens hair and reduces blade friction.
- Use a sharp blade: Replace cartridges every 5-7 shaves or sooner if tugging occurs. A dull blade forces pressure that causes irritation.
- Shave with the grain: Move the blade in the direction of hair growth using light, short strokes. Rinse the blade every 1-2 strokes to prevent clogging.
- Soothe afterward: Rinse with cool water to calm the skin, pat dry gently, and apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm or aloe vera gel to hydrate and reduce inflammation.
Tips
- Never dry-shave — even water alone is better than nothing
- Shaving against the grain gives a closer cut but dramatically increases ingrown hair risk
- Replace your blade at the first sign of tugging, not on a fixed schedule
