Dust the knot with baby powder and tease apart with pins

5

Sprinkle baby powder, cornstarch, or talcum powder onto the knot to reduce friction between the chain links, then use two fine needles or pins to gently work the knot open.

Steps

  1. Lay the necklace flat on a clean, well-lit surface and unclasp it if possible.
  2. Sprinkle a small amount of powder directly onto the knot to lubricate the links.
  3. Insert the tips of two fine needles or straight pins into the center of the knot.
  4. Gently wiggle and pull the pins apart, working the tightest sections first.
  5. Once loosened, use your fingers or the pins to unravel the chain completely.
  6. Wipe the necklace with a soft cloth to remove powder residue.

Tips

  • Work under bright light so you can see the knot structure clearly
  • Cornstarch works just as well as baby powder and is talc-free
  • Never pull or yank the chain — patience prevents broken links
