Mist aerosol hairspray on patent leather for a quick gloss
2
Spray a light mist of aerosol hairspray onto patent leather or other shiny-finish shoes from about 30 cm (12 inches) away, let it dry for 60 seconds, then buff gently. The polymer resins in hairspray form a thin, glossy film that enhances the existing shine on smooth, non-porous surfaces.
Why It Works
Hairspray contains film-forming polymers (typically PVP or VA copolymers) that dry into a clear, hard layer. On non-porous surfaces like patent leather, this creates an even gloss similar to a lacquer topcoat. The effect is temporary and wears off within a few hours.
Tips
- Best for patent leather and vinyl — avoid on matte leather, suede, or fabric as the residue dulls the finish
- Use a basic aerosol hairspray without moisturizers or oils; extra ingredients leave a sticky film
- Apply one light pass only; heavy buildup cracks and flakes
- Wipe shoes clean before spraying so the film bonds to leather, not dust
- Remove buildup between uses with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol
