Increase indoor humidity to 30-50%
4
Static electricity builds up far more easily in dry air because there is less moisture to conduct charges away from surfaces. Raising indoor humidity to 30-50% relative humidity allows static charges to dissipate before they accumulate enough to produce a noticeable shock.
Steps
- Run a humidifier in frequently used rooms, especially bedrooms and home offices where you spend extended time.
- Monitor with a hygrometer — aim for 30-50% relative humidity. Digital hygrometers are inexpensive and widely available.
- Add houseplants that release moisture through transpiration, such as peace lilies, Boston ferns, or spider plants.
Tips
- Drying clothes indoors on a rack also raises humidity levels naturally
- Keep humidity below 60% to avoid promoting mold and dust mite growth
- A whole-house humidifier connected to your HVAC system provides the most consistent coverage for larger homes
