Soak stains in white vinegar or lemon juice

4

Apply undiluted white vinegar or lemon juice directly to yellow sweat stains and let it soak for 30 minutes before washing. Both are mild natural acids that break down the buildup causing discoloration.

Steps

  1. Apply the acid: Pour white vinegar or lemon juice directly onto the stained areas, saturating the fabric.
  2. Work it in: Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft brush to help the liquid penetrate the fibers.
  3. Soak: Let the shirt sit for at least 30 minutes. For stubborn stains, soak the entire garment in a basin of water mixed with 1-2 cups of vinegar for up to an hour.
  4. Wash as usual: Machine wash on the normal cycle.
  5. Air dry or check first: Inspect the stain before machine drying to avoid heat-setting any remaining discoloration.

Why It Works

Sweat stains are caused by a reaction between aluminum in antiperspirants and proteins in sweat. The acetic acid in vinegar and citric acid in lemon juice dissolve these mineral and protein deposits.

Tips

  • White vinegar is preferred over apple cider vinegar to avoid additional staining
  • Lemon juice works best when followed by brief sun drying, as sunlight boosts its bleaching effect
  • Safe for most fabrics, but avoid prolonged soaking on delicate materials
