Soak in oxygen bleach (OxiClean or similar)
4
Dissolve powdered oxygen bleach in warm water and soak the stained shirt for several hours. Oxygen bleach is a color-safe alternative to chlorine bleach that works well on organic stains like sweat buildup.
Steps
- Prepare the soak: Fill a basin or sink with warm water and add oxygen bleach powder (such as OxiClean or store-brand equivalents) according to the package directions.
- Dissolve fully: Stir until the powder is completely dissolved.
- Submerge the shirt: Place the stained garment in the solution, making sure the yellowed areas are fully covered.
- Soak for 4-8 hours: For tough stains, soak overnight. Follow the product's maximum soak time guidelines.
- Wash normally: Remove the shirt, drain the solution, and machine wash on the regular cycle.
Why It Works
Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) releases hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in water. This oxidizes the organic compounds in sweat stains, breaking them apart without stripping color the way chlorine bleach does.
Tips
- Not for wool, silk, or garments with leather trim -- check the care label
- Warm water activates oxygen bleach more effectively than cold
- Can be added to regular wash loads as a booster for general brightening
