Switch to a single-blade safety razor or electric razor
4
Multi-blade cartridge razors can cut hair below the skin surface, increasing the chance of ingrown hairs. Switching to a single-blade safety razor or an electric razor often reduces irritation significantly.
Why It Works
A safety razor uses one blade at a fixed angle, cutting hair at skin level rather than pulling and cutting beneath it. This means less chance of the hair curling back into the follicle. An electric razor trims hair just above the skin surface, which sacrifices a little closeness but greatly reduces ingrown hairs and razor burn.
Tips
- Safety razors have a learning curve -- start with a mild blade angle and light pressure until you develop the feel
- Electric razors work well for people with curly or coarse hair who are especially prone to ingrown hairs
- A quality safety razor handle lasts a lifetime, and replacement blades cost a fraction of cartridge refills
