Apply salicylic acid or glycolic acid to prevent ingrown hairs

4

Chemical exfoliants containing salicylic acid (a BHA) or glycolic acid (an AHA) dissolve dead skin cells around hair follicles, allowing hairs to grow out freely instead of curling back under the skin.

Why It Works

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it penetrates into pores and clears buildup from inside the follicle. Glycolic acid works on the skin surface, loosening the bonds between dead cells so they shed naturally. Both keep the path clear for emerging hairs.

Tips

  • Look for aftershave lotions, toners, or pre-moistened pads that list salicylic acid (0.5-2%) or glycolic acid (5-10%) as an active ingredient
  • Start with application every 2-3 days to assess skin tolerance before using daily
  • Avoid applying immediately after shaving if you have any nicks -- wait a few hours to prevent stinging
  • Always use sunscreen on treated areas, as AHAs and BHAs increase sun sensitivity
