Apply banana peel, cooking oil, or petroleum jelly for a quick shine

3

Rub the inside of a banana peel, a drop of olive or vegetable oil, or a dab of petroleum jelly onto clean leather shoes, then buff vigorously with a soft cloth for a temporary shine.

Why It Works

Banana peels contain natural oils and potassium that condition leather. Cooking oils and petroleum jelly fill micro-scratches and create a thin reflective layer. The effect is cosmetic and short-lived, but works well in a pinch.

Steps

  1. Wipe shoes clean with a damp cloth and let dry.
  2. Choose your shine agent: rub the inside of a banana peel across the leather, or apply a tiny amount of oil or petroleum jelly to a soft cloth and rub it on.
  3. Buff briskly with a clean, dry cloth until the surface shines.

Tips

  • Use very small amounts of oil to avoid a greasy finish
  • Petroleum jelly works best on smooth leather, not suede or nubuck
  • These methods are temporary and not a substitute for proper leather conditioning
