Buff clean leather briskly with a soft cloth

3

Simply wiping dust off leather shoes and buffing briskly with a clean, soft cloth can restore a surprising amount of natural shine without any products at all.

Why It Works

Leather contains natural oils that rise to the surface with friction and warmth. Buffing smooths the top grain and redistributes those oils, creating a low-level sheen. This works best on shoes that are already reasonably conditioned.

Steps

  1. Wipe shoes with a damp cloth to remove surface dust and let dry.
  2. Using a microfiber cloth, flannel, or old t-shirt, rub briskly in quick circular motions over the entire surface.
  3. Continue buffing for 30-60 seconds per shoe until a subtle shine appears.

Tips

  • Works best on smooth, well-maintained leather
  • Completely ineffective on suede or heavily dried-out leather
  • Combine with any other method in this list for a better result
