Protect friction points with pads, moleskin, or balm

4

Apply blister prevention pads, moleskin, or anti-chafing balm directly to friction-prone areas on your feet before wearing new shoes. This creates a protective barrier while the shoes break in naturally.

Steps

  1. Identify hot spots: Wear the shoes briefly and note where they rub -- typically the heels, sides of toes, and ball of the foot.
  2. Apply protection: Place moleskin, blister pads, or thick bandages on the friction points on your skin before putting the shoes on.
  3. Try anti-chafing balm: Apply a thin layer of anti-chafing balm or solid deodorant to friction areas for a slick barrier that reduces rubbing.
  4. Continue until broken in: Keep using protection each time you wear the shoes until they soften and conform to your feet.

Why It Works

Blisters form from repeated friction on unprotected skin. A physical barrier (moleskin, pads) or lubricant (balm) absorbs or eliminates that friction, letting you wear the shoes through the break-in period without skin damage.

Tips

  • Moleskin is the most durable option and stays put all day
  • Anti-chafing balms can wear off with heavy sweating -- reapply as needed
  • Heel grip inserts can also prevent slippage that causes heel blisters
