Use a tire sealant and inflator for a temporary fix

3

Aerosol tire sealant products inject foam sealant through the valve stem to temporarily seal small punctures and re-inflate the tire enough to drive to a repair shop. This avoids a full roadside tire change but only works for minor tread punctures -- not sidewall damage or large holes.

Steps

  1. Pull to a safe location and turn on hazard lights. Position the wheel so the valve stem is near the top.
  2. Shake the sealant can vigorously, then screw the nozzle onto the valve stem.
  3. Dispense the entire can into the tire following the product directions.
  4. Drive slowly (under 20 mph) for 2-3 miles to distribute the sealant inside the tire.
  5. Check tire pressure and inflate to the recommended PSI if needed.
  6. Drive directly to a tire shop at reduced speed for a permanent repair.

Tips

  • This is a temporary fix only -- do not drive long distances or at highway speeds
  • Tell the tire technician you used sealant so they can clean it out before patching
  • Keep a can in the trunk as a backup even if you carry a full-size spare
