What’s the proper way to change a flat tire?

Park on a firm, level surface away from traffic, engage the parking brake, turn on hazard lights, and place wheel chocks behind the wheel diagonally opposite the flat. Loosen the lug nuts while the car is still on the ground, then jack up and swap the tire.

If you are unable to change the tire yourself, feel unsafe doing so, or lack the necessary equipment, calling roadside assistance gets a trained technician to your location to swap the tire for you. This is the safest option in bad weather, heavy traffic, or at night.

Aerosol tire sealant products inject foam sealant through the valve stem to temporarily seal small punctures and re-inflate the tire enough to drive to a repair shop. This avoids a full roadside tire change but only works for minor tread punctures -- not sidewall damage or large holes.
