Remove paint transfer scuffs with a melamine foam sponge

3

A melamine foam sponge (Magic Eraser) can remove paint transfer scuffs -- marks left by another object's paint rubbing onto your car -- without needing polishing compound. Dampen the sponge, rub the scuff with very light pressure for a few seconds, and wipe clean. This is not suitable for actual scratches in your car's paint.

Why It Works

Melamine foam is a micro-abrasive that breaks down foreign paint deposits sitting on top of your clear coat. It works well on surface-level scuffs from shopping carts, door dings, or rubber bumper marks.

Tips

  • Test on an inconspicuous area first -- melamine foam can dull clear coat if you press too hard or rub too long.
  • Stop immediately if you see your car's paint color transferring to the sponge.
  • Follow up with a coat of wax or sealant on the treated area to restore protection.
  • If the area looks hazy afterward, a quick pass with polishing compound and wax will restore the shine.
