Start and drive the car every 1-2 weeks

4

Running the engine periodically lets the alternator recharge the battery, counteracting both self-discharge and parasitic drain from onboard electronics. A short drive is more effective than idling alone.

Steps

  1. Start the car at least once every 1-2 weeks.
  2. Drive for a minimum of 15-20 minutes at normal road speeds so the alternator operates at full output.
  3. Turn off unnecessary accessories (headlights, heated seats, air conditioning) during the drive to maximize charging current.

Tips

  • Idling alone charges the battery very slowly because the alternator spins at low RPM. A highway-speed drive is significantly more effective.
  • If the battery is already weak or the car struggles to start, this method alone will not be enough -- pair it with a maintainer or replacement.
  • This approach also circulates engine oil and prevents flat spots on tires, making it good general practice for infrequently used vehicles.
