Heat your key with a lighter to thaw a frozen lock
3
Carefully warm the metal blade of your car key with a lighter or match for a few seconds, then gently insert it into the frozen lock. The heat transfers into the lock cylinder and melts the ice blocking the mechanism.
Steps
- Hold a lighter or match flame to the metal blade only for 5-10 seconds. Avoid heating any plastic fob or electronics.
- Insert the warm key gently into the frozen lock.
- Hold it in place for a few moments to let heat transfer into the cylinder.
- Try turning the key with light pressure. If it does not budge, remove the key, reheat, and repeat.
Tips
- Never force a frozen lock -- a snapped key inside the cylinder creates a much bigger problem.
- Do not overheat the key to the point of glowing; mild warmth is sufficient.
- For frequent freezing, spray the lock cylinder with silicone lubricant before winter to prevent water ingress.
