Run the car defroster on maximum heat

Start the engine, set climate control to the defrost position, turn heat to maximum with the fan on high, and switch air intake to fresh air (not recirculate). Warm air gradually melts the ice from inside the glass over several minutes.

Steps

1. Start the engine and set the climate control to Defrost mode.
2. Turn temperature to maximum heat and fan speed to high.
3. Set air intake to Fresh Air rather than recirculation for faster defogging.
4. Wait several minutes for the warm air to soften and melt the ice.
5. Use an ice scraper to clear loosened ice once it starts lifting.

Tips

• Never pour hot water on a frozen windshield -- the rapid temperature change can crack the glass.
• This method is slower than chemical sprays but requires nothing beyond the car itself.
• Rear defrost (if equipped) can be activated simultaneously for the back window.
