Buff out light scratches with polishing compound or toothpaste

4

For shallow clear-coat scratches that your fingernail doesn't catch on, a mild abrasive can buff them out. Apply a small amount of automotive scratch-removal compound or plain white toothpaste (not gel) to a clean microfiber cloth and rub gently in small circular motions for 1-2 minutes. Wipe clean and repeat if needed.

Steps

  1. Wash and dry the scratched area thoroughly to prevent further scratching from trapped dirt.
  2. Run your fingernail across the scratch. If it doesn't catch, this method should work. If it catches, the scratch is too deep and needs touch-up paint.
  3. Apply a small dab of compound or white toothpaste to a microfiber cloth.
  4. Rub gently over the scratch using circular motions with light pressure for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Wipe clean with a separate damp microfiber cloth and inspect.
  6. Repeat once or twice if improved but still visible.
  7. Apply car wax over the treated area to seal and protect the finish.

Tips

  • Toothpaste works because it contains fine abrasives similar to polishing compound, but a dedicated automotive product gives more consistent results.
  • Avoid gel toothpaste or anything with colored additives -- only plain white paste.
