Use Toothpaste or Scratch Removal Polish
3
Description
Mild abrasives can sometimes buff out scratches that are only in the clear coat layer of the paint.
Recipe/Instructions
- Clean Area: Thoroughly wash and dry the scratched area to remove dirt that could cause further scratching.
- Assess Scratch: Run your fingernail gently across the scratch. If your nail doesn't catch, it's likely a shallow clear coat scratch and might be fixable with this method. If it catches, the scratch is deeper and may require touch-up paint or professional repair.
- Apply Compound: Apply a small amount of regular white toothpaste (not gel) OR a dedicated automotive scratch removal polish/compound to a clean, soft microfiber cloth.
- Buff Gently: Rub the cloth gently over the scratch using small circular motions or back-and-forth motions with light to moderate pressure for 1-2 minutes.
- Wipe Clean: Wipe the area clean with a separate clean, damp microfiber cloth.
- Inspect & Repeat: Check if the scratch has diminished. If improved but still visible, repeat the buffing process once or twice more.
- Wax Area: After cleaning, apply a coat of car wax to the treated area to protect the paint.
